How Long Between Haircuts
Whether or not you should get a haircut ultimately comes down to how fast your hair grows and the kind of hairstyle you’re styling. Hair grows at an average rate of about 1/2 inch per month, and this number depends on your genetics, hair type, and lifestyle. If you’re healthy, your hair is growing at its maximum rate. If you have a poor diet, lack exercise, have high stress levels, or are experiencing hair loss, growth can be slower. How fast your hair grows combined with your desired hairstyle makes all the difference.
For example, if you normally get a buzz cut, crew cut, or textured crop on top with a skin fade on the sides, then you may need to cut your hair more often. A half an inch of hair growth on your faded sides can throw off your short haircut. However, if you have a classic long taper on the sides with a medium-length cut on top, then a little longer hair won’t be noticeable.
In general, how often you should be getting your haircut comes down to hair length, budget, and style. For short men’s haircuts, we recommend once a month at least. For medium length hairstyles, guys can get a trim every 1 to 2 months. And for long hair, you can get a cut once every 3 to 6 months. Just remember that your fade or undercut is going to look messy faster so visiting your barber or stylist for a quick trim to maintain your look is always worth it.
Lastly, when it comes to big events such as a wedding, job interview, birthday, or special date, most barbers recommend a haircut a few days earlier. This buffer allows the cut and your hair to settle, allowing you to style everything better.
Getting Your Hair Cut
Once you’ve decided to get a haircut, you may start procrastinating if you aren’t sure how to talk to your barber. Some men feel uncomfortable asking for a specific haircut because they don’t know the right hair terminology, and this makes them nervous. Fortunately, we have a guide for that.
Nevertheless, the easiest way to get the best cut is to show your stylist a picture and then ask for their advice. A good hairdresser should be able to tell you whether a style will work for your hair type and look, and even recommend the best pomade or wax to use.
